“According to our outlook and formula it just points that it’s going to be quite chilly and cold, snowy and an old-fashioned kind of winter on tap,” Farmers’ Almanac managing editor Sandi Duncan said back in September 2013.
Many farmers like Essex County Federation of Agriculture president Mark Balkwill are faithful almanac readers. He wouldn’t base all his farming decisions on it but “it’s surprising how close they come,” Balkwill said. A biting cold winter would be good for insect control. “It wouldn’t bother me at all.”
